SYMPOSIUM WITH LEGAL COUNSEL INTERNATIONAL AND GEOFFREY LEAVER
The World Trade Center of Milton Keynes, UK, together with
Geoffrey Leaver Solicitors and Legal Counsel International, held a symposium on international legal
issues in Milton Keynes on November 27, 2008.
Geoffrey Leaver are the UK member of Legal Counsel International, which held its annual meeting the
following day at the Loch Fyne Inn in Bedford following a private tour of Woburn Abbey. 14 of the 17 LCI
members attended this event from around the world.
Lawyers in the LCI Alliance provided overviews of investment, IP and trade issues in respect of their
home jurisdictions to a large audience of business persons and entrepreneurs assembled at Jury’s Inn,
Milton Keynes. Country representatives attending included USA, Russia, China, Germany, France, Spain,
Japan, India, the UK, the Czech Republic and Canada.
The Symposium speakers included: Akana Ma, partner in the US West Coast
firm Ater Wynne, focuses on foreign clients entering the US and issues involving China trade and
production outsourcing. Thierry Garby of Lerins Avocats, Paris,
specializes in trade issues, commercial and employment law, litigation and mediation.
Vlad Zabrodin of Capital Legal, Moscow and St. Petersburg, is an active
adviser on investments into Russia, Russian company and tax law, and commercial real estate
developments.
Hiroyuki Kamano’s principal areas of practice in Tokyo are
international transactions, banking, and investment law. Thomas Oerter,
of B.B.O.R.S., Dusseldorf, Germany and Andrew Frei of Dales Leesmann in
Toronto routinely advise international clients on domestic and cross-border business, corporate and
technology matters. Likewise Frank Fu of Allbright Law Offices, Shanghai,
counsels clients on issues for foreign companies trading in China, including vigorous IP enforcement.
Premnath Rai of Delhi is an experienced corporate and business lawyer who
advises foreign investors setting up operations in his home country. Trevor
Coward is an active commercial litigator in the UK with deep involvement in technology issues,
enforcement of IP rights, and dispute resolution. Enrique Batalla of
Madrid is a recognized legal authority on technology transfers, anti-counterfeiting, IP and e-commerce
law.
Jan Pacovsky of Prague is a commercial and corporate lawyer with IP,
civil, criminal and administrative law experience. Willem den Hertog
from The Hague is an IP specialist well-versed in Dutch commercial law. Carol
Emory, Emory Law Group, Portland, moderated the Asian investment panel and gave the
closing Symposium remarks.
